BIFMA Chemicals of Concern Summit

The Business & Institutional Furniture Manufacturers Association (BIFMA) is hosting the BIFMA Chemicals of Concern Summit in Ann Arbor (Michigan) from April 29-30, 2013. Please see the attached flyer for more information.

The Summit will help define the future chemical strategy for the office furniture industry by:

• Examining trends in chemical regulation, assessment, and disclosure/transparency that could inform an update of the ANSI/BIFMA e3 Furniture Sustainability Standard.

• Exploring the possibility of creating an industry chemicals and materials database to ease reporting and compliance for the supply chain and manufacturers.

New Journal: American Chemical Society announced on May 2, 2012 its introduction of a new journal, ACS Sustainable Chemistry & Engineering, with the first issue to be published in January 2013.   The journal scope will emphasize five focal areas of research: (i) life-cycle assessment, (ii) green chemistry, (iii) waste as resources, (iv) alternative energy, and (v) green innovative manufacturing. The upcoming GreenScreen training will be held in Minneapolis in conjunction with the Minnesota Green Chemistry Conference 2013 Beakers to Business Plans (see below). This in-depth, experiential training will provide an interactive, hands-on introduction to the GreenScreenTM for Safer Chemicals, a tool developed by Clean Production Action for identifying chemicals of concern and selecting alternatives. This training session will place an emphasis in the afternoon on applying the GreenScreen to polymeric materials. We will also present updates on the GreenScreen program, including the Certified Assessor Program and validation.

Minnesota Green Chemistry Conference 2013: Beakers to Business Plans

The Minnesota Green Chemistry Forum presents their third annual green chemistry conference, Minnesota Green Chemistry 2013: Beakers to Business Plans. This day-long conference will feature keynotes, panels and break-out sessions highlighting what it takes to bring green chemistry into the marketplace. Morning sessions will focus on research, technology, work force and labor issues and academic partnerships. The focus of the afternoon will be business success stories and the “nuts and bolts” of implementing green chemistry for both start-ups and established companies.

Keynote addresses:

Dr. Paul Anastas of Yale University, one of the “fathers of green chemistry,” will present one of the keynotes.

NEW TOOLBlueGreen Alliance has launched a new, free tool that is designed by workers for workers to make it easier to learn about chemicals: ChemHAT (Chemical Hazards and Alternatives Toolbox)With ChemHAT’s searchable database, one can easily read about the scientific findings on the short and long-term health effects of over 10,000 commonly used chemicals.

BlueGreen Alliance held a webinar entitled “Trying ChemHAT on” to walk people through the ChemHAT database on Tuesday, 25 September 2012.

The Washington State Department of Ecology is pleased to announce their second webinar on the Alternatives Assessment guidance document.  The webinar will be held on November 28, 2012 at 2pm EST/11am PST. Please find below the details of this event and how to register.

Eight member states (CA, CT, MA, MI, MN, NY, OR and WA) of the Interstate Chemicals Clearinghouse will be discussing progress on their Alternatives Assessment Guidance Document. This webinar is a follow-up to the webinar conducted on August 15th.  We will discuss progress since the previous webinar and new module outlines completed or in draft.  The draft Decision Module will be highlighted as it will define which modules, in what order and to what degree, are recommended for an alternatives assessment.
